Coral Donut, Bone Terra Cotta and Leather Tassel Necklace

This sensational artisan necklace flows gracefully around the neck and along the lines of the body, soft and relaxed. It is a lovely mixture of island fashion and oriental styling composed primarily of fibrous sponge coral and dyed terra cotta. The organic shapes, inconsistencies, and rustic leather balance the more calculated geometry and symmetry of this neckpiece, making it aesthetically harmonious.

Chinese knotting in the leather cord, etching and embroidery on the beads, and the tassel itself are unique elements distinctive of China. Knotting has been a part of Chinese life for thousands of years for both decorative and functional purposes. Ornamental knotting continues to be an art form among the Chinese, who spend time and energy perfecting old knot styles and creating increasingly intricate ones. Many of the knots represent symbols that wish good fortune, longevity, happiness and so on. The knots I used in this piece are button knots and are a symbol of good luck and a representation of the cyclical nature of life according to Chinese Buddhism.

Coral is a calcium carbonate that is built up by the skeletons of small sea animals. Most likely from the Pacific Ocean, this sponge coral is cut, dyed and polished. The dye accentuates the unique texture and cavities in the natural substance, enhancing its beauty. The faux bone beads are dyed terra cotta beads that are uniquely shaped and designed to be inexact, giving them a natural charm. The beautifully embroidered beads on the tassel are antique gold-finished pewter barrels.

Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is China’s bustling metropolis with a blend of eastern and western cultures and ancient and modern styles. It seemed like a good name for this timeless designer necklace unifying a mix of old and new, rustic and polished.
