Santorini Artisan Necklace

With the exception of the copper and vermeil beads, all of the beads are handmade in Greece from a unique blend of volcanic terra cotta clays. They are kiln-fired and then coated with thick enamel glazes, pure gold, or green patinaed copper. The opalescent finish on the white enamel beads creates the look of pearls and gives them a beautiful reflective property. Using 100% pure gold coating on the large terra cotta globe gives this spectacular bead the look of molten gold, making it have a mirrored lake effect. The ancient appearing turquoise-like beads at either end of the necklace are pure copper coated terra cotta beads to which a unique green patina is applied.

Bali-style vermeil beads add exotic and elegant appeal to this alluring designer necklace while the spiral embellished copper beads add soul and a unique ethnic flavor. The color palette of white, gold, copper and blue immediately made me think of the Greek Isles. In addition to the colors, the fact that most of the beads in this piece are handmade in Greece along with the use of spirals, which in the square form are known as the Greek Key or Meandros, I named this awesome necklace after one of the most beautiful Greek Isles. Santorini one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea was formed by a huge volcanic eruption and forms a small circular archipelago. The white stucco architecture of the island is in stark contrast with the turquoise blue waters and magnificent blue sky. Beautiful Greek Orthodox churches, particularly in the village of Oia, are unique whitewashed buildings with blue arches and domed rooftops and this is the image I had in mind after designing this artisan necklace.
