Cloisonne is an intricate and distinct style of enamel decoration in which enamel is applied and fired in raised cells that are made of soldered wires, on a metal background. Each cloisonne bead can take up to 4 hours to produce. First a copper base is cast on which a general design is sketched. Then brass wire cells are soldered to the surface to form a pattern. Enamels are then painted in the cells and fired a first time. This painting and firing is repeated until every filled in space becomes smooth. The surface is ground smooth and polished and lastly the cells are gold or silver plated. This method of decoration was probably invented in the Middle East, but has been highly perfected by the Chinese. It is now considered to be a Chinese art as their cloisonne has become the standard by which to measure the quality and value of cloisonne worldwide.

This cloisonné heart is additionally studded with several red Swarovski crystals.
