Fish Hook Necklace

Made in the Philippines, the distinctive stylized fish hook represents strength, prosperity, abundance, fertility and a great respect for the sea. It is made from the natural horn of the caribou and dyed and polished to a lustrous finish. Fishing is an important industry in the Philippines with over half of the protein in the Filipino diet coming from fish and other seafood.

The six branches of coral are cut from bamboo coral found on the ocean floor of the South Pacific. They are dyed in order to obtain this bright red hue. The marbled moss green-yellow chunky gemstones are imported from China’s Hubei province as "yellow turquoise." This stone is known by the gemstone industry as yellow turquoise, but it is thought rather to be a magnesite or serpentine. But whatever it is, it’s beautiful and intriguing.

The smooth, shiny yellow beads are a sort of faux amber, actually made from tree resin. They are made by cottage industry in Indonesia, where tree resin is mixed with colorful dyes, poured into molds, cut and shaped by hand, and then buffed to a smooth finish. Almost liquid in appearance, the silver and gold beads are actually terra cotta beads from Greece that are shaped, kiln-fired, re-fired with rough copper, and then coated with 100% pure silver or gold.

Complementing the stylized fish hook, the sterling silver bail adds unique style of its own with coiled wire spirals and an overall contemporary, yet earthy design. This dramatic and soulful necklace closes with rugged terra cotta rings and a giant brass lobster clasp. It can be adjusted in length by using the provided chain links.
