The colors and textures in both this harmonious bracelet and the matching necklace bring vivid pictures of thatched roof beach bungalows to mind. I picture the swaying palm trees, the pristine turquoise waters, the pure white sand and the rattan, reed, and palm frond bungalows on bamboo stilts. Tahiti and Bora Bora of French Polynesia seem to be the most pictured and famous island vacation spots with the over water thatched roof bungalows, but upon research, I found Tikehau of the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia to be even more amazing. It is considered to be among the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia, forming an almost unbroken 16 mile circle that has made it home to the largest number of fish of all the atolls. The primary industry on the island is fishing as Tikehau supplies Tahiti and other island markets with fish from their fish parks. The word Tikehau means "peaceful landing" and is apparently exactly how you feel upon arrival at the island or motu. Naming these unique artisan pieces of jewelry after this spectacular Polynesian island seemed fitting and brings some additional significance to the carved bone fish pendant and the silver fish charm adorning the necklace and bracelet.

The intricately detailed silver fish charm is handcrafted in a remote mountain village of Thailand from 99% pure silver by skilled artisans of the Karen Hill Tribe. The Hill Tribes have only become known for their beautiful silver work over the past decade. Before then, they made most of their income from opium sales, but with government support, the growth of their silver industry has given them a better way of life. The Hill Tribes consist of about 20 different tribes, including the Karen, the Hmong, and the Yao. Every member of the family becomes involved in the creation of the silver beads. The silver is melted down with torches, poured into molds, and then shaped by a long process of tapping. The beads are hammered and etched, or sculpted into shapes, often emulating natural objects including insects, ocean life and flowers. The distinctive styling has an earthy, handmade, artistic look and being completely handmade, no two pieces are the same.
