Contemporary glass eye beads in bright colors alternate with silver cubes to make a fun and exciting bracelet that is a modern day piece of artisan jewelry based on traditional Middle Eastern superstition of the Evil Eye. The Evil Eye basically is a belief that some people can place a curse on victims, intentionally or unintentionally, by a jealous stare, malevolent gaze, or even involuntary glance. Although the specific beliefs vary from culture to culture, the sin of envy is what is generally thought to give power to the Evil Eye.
There are many talismans against the Evil Eye, with eye beads being especially common in Turkey. The eyes on the beads are thought to be able to thwart the glance of the Evil Eye thereby protecting the wearer from any bad luck the curse may bring. Historically, the beads were usually blue which seems to come from the colors reflecting ability and just general ability for bringing good luck.
Individually handmade, these beautiful glass cubes will vary slightly in form, color, and design. They are made by the very time-intensive process of lampworking in which rods of glass are melted in the flame of a torch and then wound slowly and evenly around a mandrel. Multiple colors, designs and features are added while the molten glass is turning on the rod. This is an age old method of bead-making that has been passed down from generation to generation of skilled artists. Each of these beads is a unique and wonderful piece of art.
Made in Greece, the silver cubes are actually made of terra cotta clay that is kiln-fired, coated with rough copper and re-fired, and then heavily coated with 100% pure silver. With squared edges, they perfectly complement the rounded edges of the inexact glass cubes. Sterling silver chain and a beautiful handmade sterling silver toggle and ring clasp complete this energetic bracelet, adding texture and style.
